HOBOKEN, NJ - A fast moving fire ran up walls and along floors of attached wood frame dwellings on Super Bowl Sunday, displacing six families. At around 4:45 p.m. city fire companies were dispatched to 128 Park Avenue where they found a fire on the first-floor of a two-story dwelling in the wall that was attached to a three-story dwelling at 126. Flames were moving rapidly as Battalion Chief O'Brien summoned all seven city fire units to the scene. The buildings involved were set back approximately 20-feet from the street, so aerial ladders could not be used. As handlines were being put into operation, and primary searches were being made, the fire had extended to 124 Park Avenue. B.C. O'Brien notified Fire Dispatch to send the re-locating units coming into the city to report directly to the fire for additional manpower. North Hudson Squads 1 and 7, Engine 9, Ladder 2, Safety 1, and 2nd Battalion Chief Cranwell went to work at the scene. Four layers of tar on the building's roof tops slowed down firefighters work opening up the roof. Some of the deep seated fire broke through the front walls on the Park Avenue side of the three-story structures to light up the front of the building. Residents watched their homes going up in smoke across the street in below freezing weather. Occupants were also evacuated from two adjacent buildings at 122 and 130 Park Avenue as a precaution, but were later allowed to return. The fire was brought under control around 7:15 p.m. after firefighters opened up many walls and ceilings. The Fire Department's investigation unit was on the scene to determine the cause of the blaze. The Hoboken Ambulance Squad and Gong Club set up a rehab station for firefighters after their tough battle.
