ST. AUGUSTINE, FL - An accident along US Route 1 around noon on Friday, March 12, 2010 left one woman dead, another in serious condition and several others with minor injuries.
Witness to the accident say the accident occurred when a white SUV cut off a pickup traveling south on US 1. The driver of the pickup lost control and the truck crossed traffic and the median, t-boning a Lexus that was traveling north. The driver of the Lexus died at the scene.
Units from St. Johns County Fire Rescue responded to the scene with Engine 12, Squad 5 (a heavy rescue unit), and several rescue units. Fire fighters extricated the driver of the pickup then transporter her to a local hospital. With heavy intrusion to the passenger compartment of the truck, fire fighters worked for twenty minutes to free the driver. Both the Lexus and the Pickup truck sustained major damage, slowing the extrication process considerably.
The remains of the white SUV lay in a ditch on its roof where it came to rest along the south bound side of the road. The driver of the SUV was transported by SJCFR but not other information was available at this time.
Along with St John’s County Fire, the Florida Highway Patrol, St. Johns County Sheriff’s department and the Coroner’s office all responded to the scene.
The accident is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol and no cause had been determined as of this time.
