Garfield women burned

GARFIELD, NJ - On Sunday, February 7, 2010 Garfield fire companies were dispatched to 25 Washington Place around 10:30 a.m. on a reported house fire.

As units arrived, Assistant Chief James Kovacs reported nothing was showing from the house but units were made aware of a burn victim inside the house by police. A 76-year-old woman suffered severe burns after her clothes caught fire while she was cooking. E

MS units, firefighters and paramedics arrived and advised they needed a medi-vac for the victim.

Firefighters checked the kitchen for any extension of fire and searches proved to be negative.

The landing zone was 20th Century Field on Elizabeth Street in the center of the city, Assistant Chief John Kopacz was in command of the zone along with Assistant Chief Alen Tani. Engine Co. 2 staged on the scene and stretched a handline to stand by.

The victim was taken by North Star to St. Barnabas Medical Center’s burn center in Livingston NJ. The woman suffered 3rd degree burns on the upper part of her body above the waist.
